Explanation of terms

The short description in search engine optimization is a brief text that summarizes the content of a webpage. It is often displayed in search engine results to give users a quick overview of the page content. For us, it summarizes the key points of the job posting you created.

Configuration

If you create or edit a publication, you can enter or generate the page title and short description for the job posting using AI.

Behavior in the System

  • Purpose
When your job postings are displayed on the internet, the search results can be shown with the content from the page title and short description of the publication if you have maintained these. If not, search engines will use any line of text from the job posting. This may not be appropriate and may not adequately describe the job posting. As a result, applicants may not click on this search result due to an unsuitable description.
  • Prerequisite for Use
The short description field only appears in the publication if you have activated it in the field schema configuration. Read more about it here: Using the Field Schema of the Publication
  • Content of the Short Description
The short description should not simply repeat a portion of the text that has been maintained in the publication or job posting template. In the search results display, unique, non-redundant content (unique content) is usually rewarded with a better ranking in search results.
You can read more about how such a description should be best formulated on these pages: Redirect to Google
  • Generating the Short Description through Artificial Intelligence
We offer you the option to generate the short description using Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the publication. We use Microsoft Power Automate for this purpose. In configuring this function, we followed Google's recommendations for creating a short description.
If you click on the robot icon  in the publication, the following content from the job posting and publication will be read and used to generate a suitable short description after a short wait:
    • Position
    • Subtitle
    • Locations
    • Target groups
    • Working hours
    • Contract duration
    • Company
  • Editing the Generated Short Description
It may happen that the automatically generated short description does not seem appropriate to you. You can rewrite the text until it fits your needs and then save it by saving the publication.
  • Display on Google
Since the introduction of Google for Jobs, job search results are often no longer displayed with a title and short description but in a separate area on the search results page. Here, the title, location, job portal through which the job posting was found, and other details are listed. The short description is no longer visible at first glance. However, it appears that the content of the page title and short description continues to influence the ranking of the job posting on Google, and well-maintained job postings are displayed higher in the search results.
In specific searches (e.g., by URL of the job posting or a very specific title), the page title and short description are still listed on Google.
  • Handling of the Short Description by Job Boards
Job boards like StepStone and others do not read the short description.
